Padmashree Dr. Usha Kiran Khan

Dr. Khan has served the rural women of Bihar as the vice-chairperson of the historic Mahila Charkha Samiti and holds the post of Chairperson now. As a member of the management committee of Jawahar Bal Bhavan, Bihar, she has been active in ensuring child rights and inculcating values in young people. The range of her cultural responsibilities spans over multifarious activities. Dr. Khan presides over ‘Safar Mynah’, a theatre group composed of slum-dweller children while she is also the chairperson of ‘Nirman Kala Manch’, a thespian group approved by the National School of Drama, Sangeet Natak Akademi and other agencies under the Department of Culture. She is a member of the East Central Zonal Cultural Committee under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. She has been a delegate representing Bihar in the ‘Vishwa Hindi Sammelan’ in Surinam and New York. She travelled to Mauritius to attend the ‘Vishwa Bhojpuri Sammelan’ as a delegate of ‘Setunyas’. She is a Hindi-Maithil writer and retired academic historian.  In 2011, she won a Sahitya Akademi Award for the Maithili novel Bhamati: Ek Avismaraniya Premkatha. In 2012, she was awarded a Kusumanjali Sahitya Samman by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations for her novel Sirjanhaar. Dr. Khan has a major role to play in the revival and bolstering of Hindi and Maithili drama. Her Hindi play ‘Ugna Re Mor Katay Gelay’ has notched up many diamond jubilees across the country. She has been selected for the Padmashree Award for the year 2015. She is the first woman writer from Bihar to receive such an honour.

He started with BBC in 1995 and became the state correspondent of Bihar in 1997. Filing mainly for Hindi and Urdu service, as well as the South Asia Regional Unit of BBC World Service. His journalistic career started in 1976 when he started writing for Hindi – language newspapers Ranchi Express. Between 1978 to 1983, he worked for the national news agency, Hindustan Samachar. From 1984 to 1992, he reported for Hindi dailies, Prabhat Khabar and Pataliputra Times. He has also edited the weekly newspapers, Lokpatra and Janadesh. During this period he also contributed to several news magazines and All India Radio. In 1993, he moved on to television platform and began reporting and presenting stories for the TV news magazine PARAKH, broadcast on India’s national network Doordarshan. He graduated from Ranchi University, obtaining Honours and then Master’s degree in Hindi literature.

Dr. Renu Ranjan is the Head of department PG Centre of Sociology Magadh Mahila College Patna University Bihar since 1974. She did her master thesis on socioeconomic characteristics of Non-voters in Bihar and obtained her PhD in 1984. Her substantive research focuses on Scheduled caste community. She is a leading figure and Professor of eminence in gender studies, and writes on issues of women, equality and difference with a special reference to the study of social change.  She has been instrumental in introducing two Vocational Courses on Women Studies and Population and Development in Sociology Department.

Teaching since 1980, first in Patna Women’s College and then in the Post Graduate department of History, P.U. She has been taking regular classes in UGC refresher courses in different PG Departments on topics like Population & Gender. She has co-authored one book and edited a number of books and magazines, mostly on education and environment. She is a member of several Government bodies and several Societies & Civil society organizations including East & West Educational Society etc. She is the Chairperson of PUCL (Bihar).

Ms. Keerti is the State Programme Coordinator of Mahila Samakhya, Bihar. She is a women’s rights and Dalit rights activist, development professional and trainer having been involved in advocacy, research and training on a wide range of socio-legal issues such as domestic violence, sexual harassment at work place, adverse sex-ratio, land rights of women, women’s political participation, etc. since last fifteen years. Previously, she has worked with Action Aid Association, South Asia Alliance for Poverty Eradication, National Centre for Advocacy Studies, Ambedkar Adhyasan of Pune University and World Social Forum. She has also taught Economics at Maeer’s MIT College, Pune. She is the founder member of Kabir Kala Manch, a cultural activist group that organized working class artists on the issues of peace, secularism and democracy. She has travelled extensively across India and worked in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujrat, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Bihar.

Manish Kumar started his broadcast career with NDTV’s Bihar bureau in 1995 as a Correspondent. Since then he has covered one of the most volatile decade in the state history which marked over 50 caste massacres and about a dozen scams including the fodder scam which ultimately led to the resignation of Laloo Yadav. He has extensively reported on Eastern India and is an expert on Nepal where he covered almost all the major happenings since IC 814 hijack.

Anjita Sinha is a writer and journalist who covers topics pertaining to women, children, Indian politics and society. She started her journalism career with Hindustan. She has also developed a characteristic style of her own. Her articles are suffused with a complex pattern of sentiments and feelings. They relate to emotional need. She reflects her social concerns in her articles. She has been writing on women related issues such as sexual harassment, prostitution, domestic violence, children and education, for over 20 years. Currently, she is the Senior Reporter for Rashtriya Sahara.

She has done her Masters in History from Patna Women’s College. A postgraduate diploma holder in Journalism and Mass Communication Indira Gandhi National Open University {IGNOU}, she was previously working as an Ad-hoc Lecturer for Women Studies in Magadh Mahila College, Patna University. She is a PhD on ‘Violence and the vocabulary of resistance’: a study in women’s history in the context of 20th century Bihar’. She is also a News Broadcaster in All India Radio & News telecaster in Doordarshan, Patna. She pursues her interest in freelance journalism.

 She is the Executive Director and Founder of Equity Foundation, an NGO working on women and child issues in Bihar since the last 12 years. She is also an ex-Member of Steering Committee on Women & Child Development for Planning Commission of India (11th 5 year plan: 2007-2012). She has earlier worked as an Assistant Supervisor in the Access Services, Olin and Uris Library, Cornell University, an Ivy League University in United States of America. Previously, she has worked as Development Executive for the Swiss Red Cross programme. She has over 10 publications in different newspapers and journals which include ‘Denial of existence’- a case study on the plight of ‘musahar’ women in  Bihar. Her study, ‘The Bad Karma’ on the life of prostitutes in Chaturbhuj Sthan Bihar was selected and published at Global Forum for health research 9. She has also conceptualised the idea of ‘MANJARI-Stree ke mann ki’.

She is the Editor of ‘MANJARI’. She has 14 years of experience in print media. At present she is working as Senior Copy Editor with a leading Hindi Daily in Patna. She is excellent at research, writing and documentation on wide range of topics covering relevant issues related to women. She was awarded ‘Best Employee’ at Hindustan Hindi and her report on Matric examination in Bihar ‘Danke ki Chot Par Kadachaar’ was appreciated and awarded by Hindustan Times Media Limited. Her headlines on completion of first year of Nitish Government at Bihar book fair – ‘NITISH NE THOKI TAAL, VIPAKSH NE KAHA BURA HAAL’ was prominently displayed and it was awarded by Hindustan Times Media Limited. She was given the best coverage award by Sahara Media Group on Panchayat Elections in Bihar. Her headlines on girl’s education ‘CHA GAYI BETIYAN’ was another hit for which she was awarded and appreciated by Sahara Media Group.

He is a gold medallist in MA in Labour & Social welfare from Patna University. He has been associated with the Equity Foundation since 2006 in the role of Chief Operating Officer. In this capacity, he is responsible for stream-lining the planning; monitoring and management services of the Organisation. He is also actively associated with field based researches carried by the Organisation. He is also in -charge of the management board of MANJARI.
